A first aid kit for horse and rider can be very helpful when treating an injured horse or rider while we wait for the veterinarian or doctor. For this reason, the first aid kit should include everything that may be needed in an emergency situation. At the same time, it is important to know how to select what we put there.
First distinguish between two different first aid kits: the primary, more complete and that should be kept in the barn, and a portable one with a basic content, which is always advisable to accompany us in our walks and activities with the horse.
The primary first aid kit should be a waterproof box, which manages to protect the material from rain, moisture and heat. It must be located in an accessible place and preferably very close to the barn.
One roll of cotton
A roll of gauze or ligatures
Betadine or a similar product
Bag of salt, which can be added to the water to clean the wounds
Bottle of sterilized water
Pliers (for cutting wire)
Tools to extract a horseshoe
A book of basic medical / veterinary care
In the event that we do not know how to use these tools, we will inform you through the veterinarian (while we await your arrival if necessary) and we will follow your instructions.
It is always advisable to practice with our horse so that we look safe and comfortable in a hypothetical future emergency situation.
The portable first aid kit must accompany the horse at all times and, in addition, must be designed equally for the horse and the person who will ride it. We will avoid too many things, since we would end up with a kit too big and too heavy to carry. We will avoid saturating the kit, as the goal here is portability and easy transportation.
First aid for people
Telephone numbers of veterinarians, hospitals and police
Instructions for the use of these materials, since in a case of loss of consciousness of the rider, another person can make use of the kit.
A waterproof bag with the identification of the rider: name, age, telephone number, address …
We will never remove something from the box without replacing it immediately. This also includes lending materials to neighbors or other people. Since we do not know when an emergency is going to occur, it is logical that the kit should always remain complete. In addition, the materials must also be replaced according to their expiration date.
