Cats and Babies… Are They Compatible?

Now that you’re going to be a mother, do you think you do not have time for your cat? Being a mother is one of the biggest responsibilities of our life; and you’re going to start the experience, with as much irresponsibility as abandoning a partner who depends on you? It is not a matter of equalizing the rights of animals and humans, that is the personal opinion of each one; but if in your day you decided to take charge of an animal, take responsibility and take care of it, you must be consistent.

The animals are with you every day of your life; whether they are good or bad, whether you are crying or laughing, they are there. Do you want your child to grow up knowing that by his birth you abandoned an animal; which probably would have been his first best friend? This is just a little conscience. To be a responsible mother, you must also be with your animals.

Actually, children who are raised with animals are more sociable and happier. They even have cats in some nursing homes; because they are beneficial to the elderly because of their company, touch, purr, and animal-assisted therapy is just this. Animals are beneficial for people, for all.

On the other hand, if your cat has behavioral problems; you should know that all these problems have a solution (which does not consist of anxiolytics medication), by contacting the appropriate professionals; it will be solved.

Problems of behavior of the cat when the baby is born

Generally these behavioral problems may consist of the cat urinating or defecating outside its sandpit, or some type of aggression. This stress is usually caused by the owner of the cat , consciously or unconsciously. For example, for the cat is very important its territory and smell; if we start to close doors (the baby’s room full of new furniture without pheromones of your cat); it can cause your cat to feel stressed; by not being able to mark with their pheromones that area or explore it, to have its territory perfectly controlled, one of the main activities of being a cat.

Cat pheromones are innocuous; they do not smell, they are not palpated, they are not full of microbes or anything similar; they are only for the cat’s personal use. Your cat needs to impregnate with its own smell all that surrounds it to feel calm and at ease. Otherwise, you may feel stressed and have behavioral problems.

Another example, change habits on our part. To play a lot with the cat, to have daily routines with him, to completely forget about him. Cats do not have jealousy, nor envy, nor hatred (all that is human); but what they notice is that their routines have been broken and it is a very routine animal. When you are pregnant; you can go creating other routines to a few hours in which you think that when your baby is born; you can dedicate them to the cat.

Another big serious mistake is to scold the cat for things that we had never scolded. When you have a baby we tend to be overprotective; and now we scold the cat for even getting on the couch when he has always slept there. Let’s be coherent please. This is what the cat notices and this is what causes behavior problems.

Arriving home with my baby, how do I present it to the cat?

When the baby is born, they can be taken to the cat clothes or cloths impregnated with the smell of the baby to be recognized. Having a child is one of the most wonderful experiences in life; and this joy must be shared with the cat, not see it as an enemy. Presenting our son to the cat must be as natural and loving as possible; with sincere desire to share it as a member of our family.

You have to take into account something very important, for the cat, a human baby is not the same as an adult human: it moves differently, vocalizes differently and with very loud and high-pitched noises, it smells different. It’s like a new species, so maybe on some occasion I might be afraid of it. But if we act naturally and detract from it , we will see that little by little; the cat is interested in this new partner, if we show it to him with joy, wanting him to be part of all this new happiness. We can leave without problem that the cat approaches the baby; using rewards, calmly, we can let him sleep even with him. The only risk that exists is that the cat lies on the baby, but that’s what the mothers are for; we will always be monitoring the situation, without leaving them alone.

Without fear, enjoy your baby, your partner, your cat and your dog, the family are all together.
